Here we Grow: Building a New Park
We have recently acquired 60 plus acres of riverfront land in the north end of Hartford/south end of Windsor.
Purchasing this land will allow us the opportunity to conserve one of the last riverfront parcels in Hartford and significantly expand public access to the Connecticut River by building a new park that completes the connection between the Hartford and Windsor Riverwalk. The development of the new park is divided into five phases: land acquisition & first-year development, preliminary development, phase one, phase two, and phase three. The initial concept for the use of the property includes: a wildlife conservation area; a tree nursery; an outdoor educational center; public art; a seasonal farmers’ market; an accessible fishing pier; an open-air pavilion; and a revenue-generating paddle sport center supporting crew, dragon boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.
The total budget for the project is $5,611,990, and we have $3,230,000 committed from the Richard P. Garmany Fund at the Hartford Foundation, the Capitol Regional Development Authority, the William & Alice Mortensen Foundation, the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Mifflin Foundation. These funds cover the cost of land acquisition, first-year development, preliminary development and phase one. Partial funding has been identified for the remainder of development. Additional in-kind support from multiple partners has been attained to support the early stages of the acquisition process.
A property appraisal, title search, phase I and II environmental investigations, and a boundary survey are completed. The Phase III environmental study is underway.
