Riverwalk North and Boathouse Site Improvements

Construction of Riverwalk North and the Boathouse site improvement project began in the summer of 2005 and should open to the public by Memorial Day 2007.  Once complete, Riverwalk North will connect Riverside Park to Mortensen Riverfront Plaza and downtown Hartford and features an 1100’ long architectural precast concrete wall.  The wall retains the earthen dike protecting the City of Hartford form flooding while creating space for the 12’ wide walkway.   The retaining wall’s architectural finish was designed to mimic the granite stone foundations of the Bulkeley Bridge and includes 16 tree wells with Pin Oaks that will help reduce highway noise while providing shade and color. The Boathouse site improvements includes the addition of large patios around the building’s perimeter, a concrete ramp to our existing crew dock, additional park benches, improved park lighting, a new parking lot for the boathouse with more handicap spaces, and, of course, the planting of hundreds of trees and shrubs.

Funding for this project is a blend of Federal Intermodal State Transportation and Equity Act for the 21st century funds (ISTEA-21) allocated by the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation and Special Act State Bond funds through the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. The cost for this project is approximately $5 million.
